The Role

The Development and Communications Associate will provide crucial support to the Kefa Project’s Executive Director as we reach toward increasing our current donations from $250,000 to $500,000 and engaging the Kefa Project’s 500+ donors. The Associate will report directly to the Executive Director. Primary responsibilities include: maintaining and managing donor databases, assisting in event creation and coordination, providing administrative support, and ensuring that partners remain engaged. This position will provide exposure to nonprofit fundraising, including development operations and administration, donor stewardship, constituent management and prospect research. To be successful, the Candidate must: be able to organize, possess exceptional attention to detail and a high bar for quality; be an excellent written and verbal communicator, critical thinker who displays sound judgment in prioritizing actions based on outcomes.

The Kefa Project

Founded in 2009, The Kefa Project is a nonprofit ministry with a mission to serve, empower, and advocate for at-risk youth through sustainable, quality sports ministry, which facilitates community, education, and ultimately spiritual growth.

Currently the Kefa Project’s work is primarily based in Kigali, Rwanda. Together with its local partners, the Kefa Project operates seven (7) sites for community soccer teams to empower vulnerable youth to stay in school, stay in their families, and pursue their dreams. The Kefa Project also runs a boarding academy for formerly homeless youth that provides food, boarding, education. Athletes live at the academy until they complete high school or vocational training. Finally, the Kefa Project works for family reconciliation and intergenerational change through parent programs that include a business cooperative and parenting classes.

Primary Responsibilities

Data Analysis and Research (50%):
  • Manage a comprehensive database that includes accurate external partner information.
  • Manage Kefa Project’s donor tracking system and ensure accurate reports and data
  • Develop innovative tracking tools and systems using Salesforce software.
  • Conduct in-depth prospect research to identify potential donors to add to the organization’s prospect list
  • Prepare tailored meeting briefs and materials based on research and analysis for board meetings
  • Ensure volunteer contributions is captured and reported

Communications (40%):
  • Sending tax receipt letters, thank yous, magazines, and donor engagement letters.
  • Develop follow-up tools for new donors to be engaged with the Kefa Project.
  • Assist in development of monthly/bi-monthly newsletters.
  • Assist in posting on social media. (Not a primary responsibility).
  • Assist Executive Director in managing schedule of events and meetings.
  • Assist Executive Director in coordinating with volunteers traveling to Rwanda to ensure that proper paperwork is turned in and funds are raised.

Event Support (10%):
  • Support Executive Director in development and implementation of fundraising/engagement events.
  • Assist in coordination with venues, attendees, potential attendees, vendors, and volunteer teams for events.
  • Coordinate event follow-up to ensure that pledges/attendees are promptly engaged.
  • Current events include dinner in Portland, OR, Raleigh, NC, and Milwaukee, WI.


Prior Experience
1 year of work experience preferred

Work Demands
  • Potential for occasional overnight travel (maximum 3-4 times per year) for fundraising events.
  • Occasional weekend and evening work required
  • Staff events, often times for a whole day including Saturdays.

This is a part-time position requiring 20-30 hours per week with a pay range of $20-$30 per hour dependent on experience.
