FAQs

1Where Were The Boys Before the Academy?
The boys came from many different locations in Kigali. Some were homeless living on the streets. Some were living in a landfill. Some are from extremely poor families, but were in fact living at home before the academy. All of them shared a passion for soccer and joined a Kefa Project team prior to joining the academy.
2How Are Boys Chosen For The Academy?
Boys are chosen based upon our analysis of how at-risk they would be outside of the academy, their passion for soccer, and our coaches evaluation of if they would stay at the academy. They all must show commitment to their teams prior to joining the academy.
3Do The Boys Have Families?
Most of the boys have living relatives. Some have a parent or both parents alive, some have neither alive. We do not go into specifics in terms of parents for the boys for the sake of privacy and how complicated some of their backgrounds are, however, we do actively work to reconcile them back to their families when it is possible and safe.
4How Much Does It Cost To Sponsor An Athlete?
It costs $200 to fully sponsor an athlete. However, many people partially sponsor an athlete for $30, $50, or $100.
5Why Are Your Sponsorships More Expensive Than World Vision and Other Sponsorship Programs?
Many sponsorship programs only provide for education (or in other cases are indirectly used to help the child). We do not run a orphanage or a street kids home, but rather a high-level sports and educational academy. As such, we strive to ensure that we are providing high-level facilities, educational opportunities, training, and ability to replace caloric deficiencies following trainings.
6How Can I Communicate With My Athlete?
You can write letters or send videos to us and we will make sure that your academy athlete receives them. In turn every year you will receive a letter, picture, and video throughout the year from your academy athlete.
7Can I Send Gifts To My Athlete?
Cards? Great. Pictures of your Family? Awesome. Everything Else? Maybe not. We prefer that you do not send gifts. I know that makes us seem like Grinches, but the reason for this is that all of the boys live together and we can have issues with jealousy if one boy is constantly receiving gifts and the other boys are not.
